Is "Excited Canadian" an Oxymoron?

A newsworthy week for a lot of people in my native country, Canada.

The Winter Olympics are coming up soon.

With the Winter Olympics comes the hockey tournament.

And with the hockey tournament comes the announcement of the Canadian hockey team.

Where I come from this is a pretty big deal. Hockey pervades life in Canada on many dimensions beginning at an early age: participation, viewership, and discussion.

It's all very exciting. Even for yours truly thousands of miles and an ice hockey-ignorant culture away.

One thing I couldn't help but notice during the media frenzy up north: how can it be that Canadian hockey players are so darn dull?

You would think that being selected to "Canada's team" would allow a moment -- even a split-second -- of unbridled enthusiasm.

No way, José!

It got me to thinking. Are Canadian hockey players a microcosm of the Canadian population?

Are we all really that boring?
